How to Make a Circular Ottoman

Repurposing one piece of furniture into the piece that you really need is a way to be green and frugal in your decorating efforts. A round coffee table is sturdy and large enough to make an impressive ottoman, with a little work. If you can't find a coffee table you like, try cutting down the legs of a small round dining table or a round side table for the same effect.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn a round coffee table upside down. Paint the table legs. This is the only part of the table that will show once you're done with the ottoman. Let dry completely.

    • 2

Turn the table back on it's feet. Mark 16 spots on the top of the table where you want the tufts to be. Keep them evenly spaced, in a square on the table top. Drill through each hole.

    • 3

Adhere 2-inch foam, available from craft stores, to the top of the table, using spray adhesive. Adhere additional foam around the edges of the table, to fill out the space under the lip. Finally, adhere quilt batting to the top of the foam and around the sides of the table.

Cover the top of the table with a piece of fabric that is long enough to cover the top and sides and wrap around to be stapled under the table. Sew your tufts in place. Thread a long needle with upholstery thread. Hold a tufting button to the top of the table, and a small plastic button to the bottom. Sew through the holes in the wood, securing the buttons on each end and pulling tight, to depress the foam. Repeat with all the tuft holes.

Fold the ends of the fabric around the sides of the fabric to the underside of the table and staple in place. Be especially careful to be neat as you wrap the fabric around the table legs. Your table is now an upholstered, padded ottoman.
