How to Repair Scratches on Furniture With a Hot Iron

There are a number of home remedies for fixing damage to wood furniture, ranging from rubbing out water stains with mayonnaise to buffing out scratches with a combination of cigarette ashes and water. For some scratches and dents, however, the heat from a clothes iron can be a quick, easy fix that takes just a few minutes to complete. Keep the iron on a low setting and do not leave the iron unattended on the furniture.

Moisten the wood with a little water. You can either place a few droplets on the scratch or, if the damage is on a vertical part of the furniture, hold a damp sponge against the scratch for a minute or two. You want the water to penetrate into the scratch to get the best results.

Plug in the steam iron and set the heat to the lowest position. Allow the heating element to rise to the proper temperature.

Place a clean, dry cloth or towel over the scratch. Gently iron the cloth in a circular motion similar to the one used to iron clothing. Make sure to check the spot occasionally to determine if the combination of heat and moisture has erased the scratch. If the scratch hasn't disappeared, repeat the steps and iron with the heat set at medium.
