How to Convert an Automotive Seat to a Lounge Recliner

An uncomfortable recliner can produce leg and back pain. A comfortable one allows the user to relax, and even provides a convenient place to take a nap. Because they are designed for comfort, automobile seats are easily transformed into a seat for watching television or reading the newspaper. A simple plan for converting an automobile seat into a recliner allows the user to arrange an unwanted car part into a useful piece of furniture at an economic cost.

Instructions

Choose an automotive seat that already reclines. The seat should match the color scheme of the living room in which it is placed. Select a chair with a manual headrest. Loosen the bolts on the bottom of the seat with a wrench. Remove the seat from the car carefully so the upholstery does not tear and the wood on the bottom does not break.

Turn the chair upside down. Use an electric drill to create holes in the bottom of four 6-inch long coffee table legs. Fasten the table legs onto the wooden edge of the bottom of the chair, using screws and an electric drill. Turn the chair upright. Sit down in the chair to test the strength of the legs. If the chair does not support your body weight securely, add four additional coffee table legs. Place one of the additional legs beside each of the original legs to create additional support.

Drill an additional hole into the wooden edge of the bottom-right side of the chair. This hole should be at the middle of the wood, halfway between the front and back of the chair. Drill a hole into a piece of wood 2 inches wide by 36 inches long. This piece of wood serves as a support for your leg rest. Drill a hole 2 inches from the end of this piece of wood. Use the electric drill and a screw to fasten the piece of wood to the hole you created at the center-bottom of the chair. Repeat this procedure on the left side of the chair.

Point each leg rest support toward the front of the chair. Lie a piece of wood 6 inches wide and 30 inches long over the front ends of the leg rest supports. This board serves as your leg rest. Use the electric drill and screws to attach the rest board to the leg rest supports.
