A DIY La-Z-Boy Slipcover

La-Z-Boy chairs have been a mainstay in homes since 1928. In order to preserve the fresh, crisp appearance of the fabric covering the chair, recliner or sofa for as long as possible after purchase, a slipcover offers an excellent means of protection. Over the years, patterns for sewing were developed to allow such covers to be made by the homemaker. Today, the method for making slipcovers has been so simplified, a sewing machine is not even necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a durable fabric that can withstand repeated use. Cotton, cotton blends, suede and denim are only a few of the fabrics to be considered and can be found in any fabric shop. Save money by using what is already available in the home such as an unused sheet or bedspread. When fitted properly, these items can provide an attractive, durable cover.

    • 2

Find the center of your fabric. Hold the fabric in your hands and fold it over until the outside edges are even.

    • 3

Drape the fabric on top of your chair. Align the center of the fabric with the center of the chair. Starting with the fabric closest to the floor, tug it into place over the top of the seat cushion. Leave a bit of excess fabric along the cushion and continue moving up the chair, pulling the fabric so that it covers the chair's back.

    • 4

Work your way upward from the bottom of the chair, smoothing down the fabric. Ensure that the line of fabric at the bottom of the chair is straight and parallel to the chair's bottom and to the floor.

    • 5

Pull the fabric from the front of the chair going to the back. Smooth any wrinkles or lines to ensure that the fabric lies flat along the cushion of the seat. Pull the fabric so it is taut against the back of the chair.

    • 6

Pull the fabric over the arms of the chair, tucking it in around the cushion and under the chair's arms.

    • 7

Pull any excess fabric draped over the arms to the chair's back. Tie this fabric into a bow or knot. Tying the fabric along the back of the chair so that it is pulled tightly will secure your slip cover onto your chair.
