How to Lay Out a Room With a Sectional Sofa

Whether you have a large family who tends to congregate in a living or family room, or you're a couple who likes room to stretch out, a sectional sofa offers plenty of space for everyone to lounge comfortably. Instructions

    • 1

Choose the appropriate sectional for your home and family situation. While most sectionals are L-shaped, there also are U-shaped and pit sectionals -- those which come with footstools that create a square unit. Some sectionals have a chaise lounge at one end and are good with sophisticated decor.

    • 2

Determine the best place in the room for the sectional sofa. Consider which type of sectional you have. Place an L-shaped sectional in a corner that mimics the angle of the piece, or create a cozy nook. Pit or U-shaped sectionals fit in any corner or in the center of a room as seating in front of an entertainment center.

    • 3

Select substantially sized end tables to accent the sectional. Situate one table at either end, and place a matching coffee table in the empty space of an L-shaped sectional. Alternatively, place a console table behind the length of the sectional, and place candles and flowers on it.

    • 4

Place floor lamps just behind the corners of the sectional. Use wall lamps for a sectional with its back against the wall. Place smaller lamps on a console table behind the sectional for a glow that is not overpowering.

    • 5

Place a couple of recliners or armchairs with an accent table in between in the empty space of the room not dominated by the sectional sofa. Situate the chairs so occupants can interact with family members sitting on the sectional or have a quiet conversation of their own.
