Trace the cushions’ outlines onto a sheet of tissue paper or poster board to create a pattern for the replacement cushions. Add 1 inch to all sides of the cushion outline and use this new measurement to cut out the fabric for the top and bottom panels of the cushion cover.
Cut out a piece of foam for the cushion insert. Use the original tracing of the old cushions to cut out an appropriately sized foam insert for the new cushions. Choose a thickness of foam that closely matches the thickness of the original cushions when they were new.
Cut out a strip of material to cover the vertical sides of the foam. Cut this strip of material to measure 2 inches longer than the perimeter of each cushion, and 2 inches wider than the thickness of the foam.
Lay the long strip of material on top of the top fabric panel, with the printed sides facing, and pin the two pieces of material together 1/2 inch from the edge. Sew a seam through the two pieces of material, 1/2 inch from the edge; remove the pins as you sew around the perimeter of the cushion.
Attach the second panel of fabric that creates the bottom of the cushion cover. To do this, pin the bottom fabric panel to the side strip of material so that the printed sides are facing. Sew a seam through the two pieces of material, 1/2 inch from the materials’ edges. Leave the last side of the cushion cover unattached so you can turn the cover right-side-out and add the foam insert.
Work the foam insert into place inside the cushion cover using your hands; be sure the foam fits snugly and evenly in the corners. Sew the remaining opening on the cushion cover closed, using a needle and thread.
