How to Fix a Cut in Bonded Leather

Bonded leather is made of scrap or unused pieces of leather that are bonded to a polyurethane surface. It is to leather what particleboard is to plywood. Bonded leather is much less expensive than real leather but it is also less durable. This leads to premature wear and accidental cutting of the material. Because it is similar to leather, you can repair it with a leather repair kit. The quality of the repair depends on the experience of the person applying it.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the area around the cut with a damp cloth and mild detergent. This removes the dirt and oils and helps the repair adhere to the leather.

    • 2

Rub leather prep solution from the leather repair kit around the cut area with a rag and allow the area to dry. Gently scuff the area around the cut with the sandpaper in the kit.

    • 3

Cut a piece of sub-patch material about 1/2 inch wider than the cut. Push the sub-patch into the cut with tweezers and center it on the back side of the damaged area.

    • 4

Apply the supplied adhesive between the sub-patch and the bottom of the leather. Make sure there is even adhesive around the entire cut. Hold both sides of the cut together while pushing down on the leather for several seconds.

    • 5

Spread the supplied repair compound over the cut with the palette knife. Smooth the compound with the knife to make it blend with the bonded leather. Allow the compound to dry for several hours.

    • 6

Sand the repair compound gently. Apply a second coat of repair compound over the cut and allow to dry. Repeat the process of sanding the compound and applying new layers until you are satisfied the repair is strong enough.

    • 7

Apply masking tape around the cut area to protect the original leather. Brush on the supplied color coat to the cut and allow to dry. Apply a second coat and allow to dry overnight.
