Different Materials That Sofas Are Padded With

The material used to pad your sofa cushions affects the longevity and the comfort of your sofa. Each material also affects the shape and style of your sofa cushioning. Most modern sofas are padded with a foam core, but in higher-end pieces you may also find natural materials such as cotton or down.
  1. Polyurethane Foam

    • Because of its versatility and low cost, polyurethane foam is a common padding choice for sofas. This material is typically ranges in density from low to high. Low-density polyurethane foam loses its shape and thickness more rapidly hand a higher density foam, and is usually found in low quality but inexpensive sofas. Higher density foams, however, can provide adequate cushion and support as a padding material, but this comes at a higher price. The price, however, is balanced by the longevity of a high-density foam couch versus a low density.

    Latex Foam

    • Latex foam provides a firm but comfortable padding material for your sofa that lasts for up to 20 years. In comparison, standard polyurethane foam has a life expectancy of between 10 and 15 years. Latex foam is a natural material made from the sap of the rubber tree. It is renewable and resistant to bacteria, mildew and mold. It may also be used in combination with wool for added comfort. The wool improves the natural resilience of the latex material, and is wrapped around the foam before it is inserted into your cushions. Because latex foam is not fire-resistant, manufacturers often wrap this material in a fire-retardant material.

    Cotton

    • Cotton is often used to pad sofas in the form of batting, typically in combination with a latex or polyurethane foam insert. The foam provides a base that remains firm and the cotton provides softness for added comfort. Cotton alone as a padding material tends to flatten out over time, but unlike foam padding alone, you can add another layer of cotton batting to your sofa at little cost. Cotton as a padding material is ideal for allergy sufferers because it is washable. Cotton provides the firmest support when looking at natural padding materials.

    Down

    • Down is a natural padding material that may be used alone or in combination with other natural materials to pad your sofa and requires minimal processing when compared to other materials. Often when the cushions become flat, down and feather padding can be fluffed back to its original shape. For extra support, manufacturers may use foam that contains a down-filled pocket. Sofas padded with down tend to be sold as a high-end product and are more expensive than other materials. Combining down with a foam insert provides a more affordable option.
