How to Fix a Rip in a Microfiber Sofa

Microfiber, which is made of spun polyester that is so fine, it begins to have a velvety feel, is one of the more durable couch materials on the market. That doesn't mean however, that microfiber couches cannot occasionally rip from an accident or general wear and tear. If you are unfortunate enough to find a rip in your couch, don't panic; with a few simple household items and some attention to detail you can fix it without having to go out and buy a new couch.

Instructions

Apply anti-fray treatment to the edges of the rip in the sofa. This stops the fabric from running by sealing the edges of the threading that ripped. A stronger bond between the thread and fabric are possible with the fray check.

    • 2

Thread the needle with the thread that most closely matches the couch fabric. Depending on the size of the rip, try and estimate how much thread you will need. It's always easier to clip it at the end if you have too much, than to run out of thread somewhere along the way. Tie a knot at the end of the thread and clip the excessive thread below the knot with a pair of scissors.

Start the threading process just below the hole and make a few straight stitches by weaving in and out of the fabric. Weave the fabric together by pushing the needle through the underside of one half of the rip. Then take the needle and thread it through the underside of the other half of the rip and pull the stitches tightly. Continue the weaving pattern as close together as possible between stitches. The closer the stitches are, the tighter the repair will feel.

Tie a knot with the needle when you reach the top to complete the stitch. Hide the knot beneath the fabric by weaving the needle through the underside of the fabric and clipping the end with the scissors.
