Futons Vs. Loveseats

A great living or family room is not really great unless it is a place where your friends and family can gather comfortably to enjoy one another's company and participate in activities together. This means that there has to be enough comfortable seating available for your guests. Both loveseats and futons have benefits and drawbacks when used to create additional seating in a room. Determining which one will work best in your home depends almost exclusively on how you will be using the piece.
  1. Futon Benefits

    • A futon is a piece of convertible furniture that is similar to a couch but has several noticeable differences. Futons typically consist of a frame and a cushion that goes on top of the frame. They can seat between two and four people comfortably and convert into a bed when laid flat. It is easy to change the appearance of a futon, just buy it a new cushion for the frame and you can give it a new lease on life. Futons are typically not expensive furniture items and most futons can be had for anywhere between a hundred and a thousand dollars brand new, depending on sales and the places where you are shopping.

    Futon Drawbacks

    • Futons tend to be a favorite furniture item for broke college students and bachelor pads. If you have spent significant expense and effort decorating your home, a futon may look like a cheap after thought unless you really spend time and money picking it out. Most major manufacturers do not include futons when designing living rooms sets and options, so you will probably not be able to find a futon that is an exact match to your existing couch or recliner. Futons as a whole do not tend to be the most comfortable pieces of furniture either, though comfort levels will vary by item and personal taste.

    Loveseats

    • Loveseats are typically manufactured and purchased as part of a set. If you are looking for something to complement your sofa, you probably will not do any better than a matching loveseat. Loveseats normally seat two people comfortably. They come in a wide variety of colors and styles. Some loveseats are manufactured with a pull-out bed.

    Loveseat Drawbacks

    • An inexpensive loveseat will still cost as much as a medium to good quality futon. Loveseats can not have their appearance changed easily. Loveseats are smaller than futons and they do not seat as many people as a futon will.

    The Loveseat Futon

    • Loveseat futons are smaller than full-size futons and have a combination of the features of both types of seating. If you want a smaller piece of furniture but like the options available for a futon, you may want to consider a loveseat futon.
