Wipe the area around the tear with rubbing alcohol to remove dirt and dust. Allow the leather to dry completely.
Apply leather conditioner around the area to help the patch better adhere. Wait a minimum of 24 hours before proceeding.
Cut the leather patch slightly larger than the tear in a circular shape. A circular shape reduces the chances of the patch peeling off. If possible, insert the patch inside the tear to patch from the inside out.
Squirt leather compound out of the tube onto the patch where it meets the leather sofa and press firmly to adhere it. Wait 10 to 15 minutes and apply another coat if necessary.
Remove excess compound from the patch with rubbing alcohol and a cloth. Wipe the area lightly a few times so you don't remove the repair compound and impair the ability of the patch to adhere to the leather.
Mix leather colorant to match the shade of your couch. A leather repair patch kit should have multiple color combinations to match most popular shades of leather. Apply the leather compound in several thin layers on the patch. Wait for it to dry before sitting on the couch.
