Cut off any bits of filling the animal has pulled from the leather, using a sharp pair of scissors. Trim away any bits of leather that are sticking up as well. This produces smoother work surface to repair.
Rub 240-grit sandpaper lightly over the damaged area to sand off any exposed rough leather edges. Smooth the surface further with 600-grit sandpaper.
Clean the leather with a soft cloth dipped in rubbing alcohol. Give the alcohol at least 10 minutes to evaporate before proceeding.
Spread leather filler from a leather repair kit onto the animal-scratched furniture, using a palette knife. Let the filler dry for at least five minutes, and then sand it smooth with 600-grit sandpaper.
Dip a small sponge, such as a makeup sponge, into leather colorant that matches the leather furniture. Wipe a thin layer of colorant onto the damaged area. Allow the coloring agent time to dry. If necessary, add additional layers of colorant, letting each layer dry between applications.
Spread a layer of leather lacquer over the repaired area of the furniture to restore the leather’s shine. To help match the repair with the rest of the leather, wipe the leather lacquer over the entire piece.
