How to Arrange Furniture for a Den in a Small Square Room

A small den can feel even smaller when the furniture is not arranged correctly. Furniture can hog all available space within the room and make it feel confining. You will want to include only furniture that is important to the room's purpose. Most dens are used for either entertaining guests or watching television and lounging. The purpose of the room will impact which furniture is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the pieces that are essential to the room. Seating furniture and an entertainment center may be the most essential for watching television; or you may prefer seating furniture and a coffee table or ottoman to entertain guests.

    • 2

Select the wall which will become the focal point. The focal point could be the entertainment center, a wall with artwork, a fireplace or windows.

    • 3

Arrange the entertainment center, if applicable, as the focal point. Avoid a bulky entertainment center. Instead hang a flat screen on the wall, and use a low and enclosed cabinet system less than 1 foot tall to hold DVDs, books, stereo or cable box. A low cabinet system won't crowd the room, and an enclosed one will keep the room from looking cluttered, which can also crowd the space.

    • 4

Face the largest piece of seating furniture toward or perpendicular to the focal point of the den.

    • 5

Arrange additional seating perpendicular or across from the largest piece of furniture. Avoid bulky chairs; using modern, sleek chairs will make the room feel less crowded and larger.

    • 6

Place a table or ottoman in between the seating furniture. A clear, glass table will keep the room feeling open. An ottoman will serve as both a table and additional seating if needed.
