How to Convert a Dresser to a Wine Rack

Remove the clothes and drawers from the dresser.

Measure the width of the drawer openings. Divide the width of the drawer openings by 4 1/2 inches, or the space per bottle, and then multiply that number by the number of drawer openings in the dresser. Multiply the result by the number of drawer openings in the dresser to find the total number of bottles your dresser can hold. Measure the depth of the dresser, and multiply it by the total number of bottles. Because you'll be buying 1-inch-by-4-inch boards but cutting them in half, divide your end result by one-half to determine the total length of wood needed.

Purchase the wood required as 1-inch-by-4-inch boards. Use the table saw to cut each board in half, resulting in 1-inch-by-2-inch boards. Cut these to match the depth of the dresser.

Starting from the middle of the drawer opening, continuously measure out 4 1/2 inches to both the left and right, using a pencil to mark each measurement, until you reach the edges of the drawers.

Using the screwdriver begin to screw the 1-inch-by-2-inch boards, their centers aligned with the pencil marks on the dresser, into the top of the wood panels that separate the dresser openings. Use the level to ensure the wood is flat. Use the drill to screw in to the wood from the rear of the dresser, securing each wooden slat in place. Screw in these slats until your new wine racks fill each dresser opening.

Use the sandpaper or electric sander to sand the dresser, including the wooden slats used for the wine.

Use a paintbrush to add wood stain to color the wood and treat it. When the new wine rack is dry, fill each row with wine bottles for use in your home.
