How to Repair a Torn Vinyl Recliner

Vinyl upholstery is an easy-care, durable alternative to leather. As with any upholstery material, however, vinyl can be damaged. Holes, burns and tears need to be repaired as quickly as possible to prevent them from becoming larger. A variety of vinyl repair kits are available that have different methods and tools for the job. Choosing the right kit and taking your time are key to an almost invisible and long-lasting repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug in an iron and set it on high. The most popular vinyl repair kits contain a small, metal ironing tool that you will use with the hot iron. Some expensive kits may include a plug-in ironing tool. Cut the backing material to fit the tear or hole. Cut the patch slightly larger than the tear so the edges slide underneath the edges of the material.

    • 2

Mix the vinyl repair paste colors to match your upholstery. Place the backing material under the tear or in the hole. Spread a thin layer of paste on top of the backing material and press the torn flap down over it. Hold it until it sticks.

    • 3

Apply a thin coat of paste over the tear and spread it out so the edges are even with the surface of the upholstery. Choose the textured paper that best matches the upholstery texture. Press it onto the paste and tape it down with masking tape.

    • 4

Hold the metal ironing tool against the hot iron plate for three to four minutes. When it is heated, rub it in a circular motion for about 30 seconds over only the part of the paper that covers the paste.

    • 5

Peel the paper off carefully once it is completely cool. You may need to repeat Steps 3 through 5 until you achieve the desired results.
