Making an End Table With Hidden Compartments

A living room is not complete without end tables sandwiching the furniture. A pair of elegant slender end tables next to the couch gives the living room a modern appeal. Now add a hidden drawer in the end table for items you do not wish nosy neighbors or visiting family members to see, or use the drawer to hide the channel changer from the children. An easy push magnet holds the drawer closed to look just like the panels on the other sides of the table.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach two 2-by-2-by-24-inch pine boards (legs) to the 9 1/4-inch edges of a 1-by-10-by-9 1/4-inch pine board (back board) with 2-inch screws and a cordless drill.

    • 2

Attach two 1-by-2-by-9 1/4-inch pine boards (front boards) between another pair of legs using 2-inch wood screws and a cordless drill. The first of the front boards must be flush with the top of the legs and the second front board must be placed 7 1/4 inches from the top of the legs.

    • 3

Attach a 16-inch drawer slide to the 19-inch side of a 1-by-10-by-19-inch pine board (side apron) with the screws that are included in the drawer slide package. Repeat this for the second side apron.

    • 4

Connect the front and back sets of legs with the two side aprons using 2-inch wood screws and a cordless drill. This will make the frame of the end table.

    • 5

Insert three 2-by-2-by-9 1/4-inch pine boards (support blocks) between the side aprons flush with the top. The first block must be flush with the front of the end table, the second in the middle and the third flush with the back board of the end table. Screw 3-inch wood screws into the support blocks.

    • 6

Grip a 1-by-10-by-24-inch pine board in a table vise with the 24-inch edge facing upward. Drill three 1/4-inch holes 1 inch from each end and in the middle . Use the 1/4-inch diameter boring bit and the cordless drill.

    • 7

Take the 1-by-10-inch board out of the vise and set it back in the vise with the opposite 24-inch edge facing up. Drill three 1/4-inch holes 1 inch from each end and in the middle using the 1/4-inch diameter boring bit and the cordless drill.

    • 8

Grip two 1-by-3-by-24-inch pine boards in a table vise with the 24-inch edges facing up. Repeat Step 7.

    • 9

Drip wood glue into the holes on all three boards. Insert a 1-inch dowel into the six holes in the 1-by-10-inch board. Connect the 1-by-3-inch boards to the 1-by-10-inch board by inserting the dowels into the 1-by-3-inch boards. This makes the top of the end table.

    • 10

Attach the top of the end table to the frame with 2-inch wood screws drilled 4 inches in from the sides and 4 inches in from the front and back.

    • 11

Build the drawer by connecting two 1-by-4-by-6 3/4-inch pine boards (drawer front and back) with two 1-by-4-by-16-inch pine boards (drawer sides). Make the drawer sides flush with the ends of the front and back. Use 2-inch wood screws to secure the four parts of the drawer.

    • 12

Attach the second half of the drawer slides to the outside of the drawer frame 1/2 inch from the bottom. Use the screws included in the package.

    • 13

Attach the 1/4-by-8 1/4-by-16-inch plywood sheet to the drawer with 1-inch brad nails using a hammer.

    • 14

Screw a 1-by-1-by-1-inch block to the inside of the drawer cavity on the bottom of the end table top and 1 inch from the front board.

    • 15

Attach half of a magnet door latch to the block with the screws included in the package. Attach the other half of the magnetic door lock to the inside of the drawer on the front board.

    • 16

Set the drawer into the slides and close the drawer. Push the drawer closed and listen for the magnets to connect. To open the drawer, push the drawer in again to release the magnetic door lock, which will push the drawer out slightly.
