How to Build a Corner Wall Unit

Room corners are often spaces you can put to better use as they present an excellent area for storage. Building a corner wall unit makes these spaces a functional part of the home. You can build the unit to serve a variety of needs. It can include cabinets, shelves, drawers, hooks or even a hidden ironing board stand. The difficulty in making a corner wall unit is in shaping the horizontal boards into triangles rather than the standard rectangles. You'll need a helper for this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 24-by-24-inch board flat on your work surface. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the other. Cut the board in half along this line, using a saw. Stand the two boards, which will be the top and bottom of the unit, up on their longest edges. Ask someone to help you set them 6 feet apart.

    • 2

Set a 24-by-96-inch board, which will form one side of the unit, against the two triangular boards so that it spans them both, and the ends of the board line up with the edges of the triangular boards. Drill six holes down through the side board and into each triangular board. Set 2-inch wood screws into each hole and tighten them securely with a drill.

    • 3

Set a 25-by-96-inch board against the other side of the unit so it overlaps the edge of the board you just installed. Drill holes every 12 inches through the side board and into the top, bottom and other side board. Attach the board by placing 2-inch wood screws in every hole.

Stand the unit up in a corner with the bottom board as the base. Cut additional 24-by-24-inch boards in half following the procedure described above. Place one of the resulting triangular boards in a desired shelf position. Mark the location on each side board and drill two holes at that level on each board. Set pegs in the holes and position the shelf board on top of the pegs. Repeat as desired for additional shelving.
