How to Build a Kitchen Nook

A kitchen nook is bench-type seating and table squeezed into the corner nook of a kitchen; it resembles the corner booths you'll find in restaurants. Often called a breakfast nook, the kitchen nook adds character to a kitchen, and it typically costs less to build one than to have one installed. It's also one of the easiest projects on a husband's "honey-do" list.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide on which part of the kitchen you want to build your nook. Measure the area. Choose to make a single bench or an "L"- or "U"-shaped bench, base on those measurements.

    • 2

Cut grained fiberboard to the length of the benches. Construct a 2-feet-high frame to support the bench. For a single bench 4-feet long, build the frame 2 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 4 feet in length. If you're building an "L"- or "U"-shaped nook, build your frames in sections then attach them together. Remember to allow for the pieces to be fit together, without overlapping or leaving gaps.

    • 3

Attach the fiberboard to the top of the bench frame. Affix paneling to the front, back and sides of the bench frame. Cover the edges with edging border. Sand to round the edges of the bench top, which will provide more comfort while sitting.

    • 4

Affix pieces of the fiberboard to the back of the bench for a backrest. Affix pieces on the sides if desired to create armrests. Sand to round exposed edges. Secure the finished frame to the wall to prevent it from sliding about when being used.

Place a kitchen table in front of the kitchen nook. Paint or stain the benches and/or table to match. Allow the paint or stain to dry before using.
