Kitchen Cabinets & Cupboard Ideas

Too many kitchens simply don't have enough cabinet, pantry or cupboard space. Organizational tools can help you make the most of the cabinet space you do have, but that may not be enough to keep your kitchen functional. Freestanding kitchen cabinets and cupboards can make all the difference, especially if you have an older home. You may also want to restyle your cabinets for a more modern look. Work with the kitchen you have to create a space that is comfortable to work in and relax in, as well as easy to keep tidy.
  1. Organizing Your Kitchen Cabinets

    • Whether you have ample cabinet space or just not enough, well-organized kitchen cabinets and cupboards can hold more and keep items neat and accessible. A visit to your local home-improvement center, a drill and bits, and an afternoon is all that is needed to reorganize your cabinets. Look for door-mounted bins to hold lids for plastic containers, racks for baking pans and stacking shelves to add space. A lazy susan can make a spice cabinet more useful. If you have a nearby door, consider an over-the-door rack sized for canned goods to clear some shelf space. These steps can free up some amount of space in your cupboards, but in some kitchens that just is not enough to make up for limited cabinet space.

    Freestanding Kitchen Cupboards

    • There are a number of kitchen cabinets, racks and cupboards available on the market today. In a kitchen with plenty of floor space but inadequate workspace, you might consider a cart or freestanding island. These offer storage space below with counter space on top, and are available in a variety of styles and price ranges. You can also opt to build your own island, even installing appliances into this kitchen cabinet unit. If you need to store dishes, a china cabinet may work well. You can hide the mess by installing curtains in your china hutch. An old-fashioned kitchen cabinet can also offer ample storage and some amount of workspace in your home. These cabinets can still be found in flea markets and antique shops.

    Adding Kitchen Cabinets

    • Adding cabinet space is a popular choice when you renovate or remodel a kitchen. Even if you can't afford a full renovation or don't feel that one is in order, you may be able to find cabinets that coordinate with your existing kitchen cabinetry at a home improvement center to add to your kitchen. Consider installing cabinetry in your laundry room to serve as a pantry, or integrating kitchen cabinets into a former breakfast nook.

    Refacing or Refinishing Cabinets

    • Making your old cabinets look new can revitalize and refresh your kitchen. You may be able to remove the doors and then sand down and paint or stain your kitchen cabinets for a new look. If your cabinets are in poor condition, refacing may be a better solution. In order to reface your cabinets yourself, you will need to order new doors as well as veneer to cover the frames of each kitchen cabinet. Refacing is much less expensive than replacing your cabinetry, while still providing an all-new look for your kitchen.
