How to Paint Formica Tabletops

Well loved and cared-for vintage kitchen furniture can give a gorgeous retro glamor to the heart of your house. Some people care a little more than others, though, and that thrift-store find that looked so fabulous in the store doesn't always fit so well once you bring it home. Painting over formica isn't hard, so with a little time and effort that table will look like it's always been a happy member of the family.

  • Degreaser
  • Sponge
  • Rags
  • 60-grit sandpaper
  • Dust mask
  • Wood filler
  • Painter's tape
  • Bonding primer
  • Brushes
  • Formica paint
  • Non-yellowing sealer

      Use the degreaser and sponge to thoroughly clean the table, and the rags to dry it.

      Rough up the surface of the formica with the sandpaper and wipe it down with the rags.

      Fill any chips with the wood filler, and let it dry thoroughly.

      Sand the wood filler so that it is smooth and even with the tabletop, and then wipe away the dust.

      If the table has metal trim, use the painter's tape to cover it.

      Apply the bonding primer with the brush. Let it dry overnight.

      Apply a coat of paint, and let it dry thoroughly. Repeat.

      Let the paint coats dry overnight.

      Apply the sealer and let it dry for at least twenty-four hours before using the table.
