How to Build a Wooden Vegetable Bin

All fruits and vegetables have conditions under which they are best kept. Unfortunately, the storing conditions vary for different types of fruits and vegetables. For instance, root vegetables such as potatoes and onions require a dark place for storage. Rather than take up more cupboard space, make your own wooden vegetable bin for your storage needs.

  • Tape measure
  • Crosscut saw

Instructions

Measure and cut your wood. Take the 10-inch x 1-inch stock and cut two 21 3/8-inch-long pieces with the crosscut saw and trim the width down to 8 7/8 inches on both pieces. Use the same stock to cut an 11 ½--inch piece and trim the width down to 7 1/4 inches. Still using the same stock, cut two pieces 14 ½- inches and trim one to 8 5/8 inches and the other to 3 inches. Take the 3/4-inch x 12-inch stock and cut a 16-inch piece and trim the width down to 11 ½ inches. Take the pegboard and cut a 13 ½-inch x 20-inch piece. These all will be your sides, bottom, top, front and back, respectively.

Modify and prep your pieces for use. Using the drill and countersink bit, make three countersink holes on the front exterior edges of the two side pieces. Measure and mark 2 3/8 inches from the top right side of the right board and 2 3/8 inches from the top left side of the left board. Measure and mark 4 3/8 inches down the left side of the right board and vice versa. Make a straight cut between the two points, forming a sloped surface.

Fit the pieces together. Measure 20 inches down from the backside top of the side pieces, and mark. Place a thin line of wood glue along the 20-inch mark horizontally across the interior of both side pieces. Fit the bottom piece along the wood glue line. Additionally, secure the bottom piece to the sides with three 1 ½-inch wood screws on either side.

Install the front bin piece. Lay a thin line of wood glue on the front-facing edges. Place the front piece against the front edges, squaring with the sides. Screw the front piece with the side and bottom piece with 1 ½-inch wood screws, three on the sides and two on the bottom. Attach the pegboard piece to the back edges with 1-inch wood screws.

Attach the cover to the constructed bin. Place the 3-inch piece over the flat top of the bin and secure them with 1 ½-inch wood screws. Take the hinge and connect it to the 8 5/8-inch pieces on the under side with included screws. Attach the other side of the hinge and secure it to the 3-inch piece.
