How to Clean a Corian Counter

Corian is a synthetic material manufactured by the DuPont company. DuPont first released Corian in 1967 and since then it has been used largely in kitchen countertops as a substitute for granite or marble, though it also has decorative uses. Unlike other countertop materials, Corian is not a "finished" product--its surface layer is the same as every layer beneath. This makes refinishing Corian counters as easy as sanding away the top layer to reveal the one beneath.

Another advantage of Corian is how easy it is to clean. It can be cleaned with ordinary household products and requires very little special care.

Instructions

    • 1

For most everyday stains and dirt, soak a sponge in warm soapy water. Clean the countertop residue with the sponge. For tougher stains, use an ammonia-based household cleaner.

    • 2

Dry Corian very carefully with paper towel after cleaning. Otherwise, water left on Corian counters can leave a blotchy residue when it dries.

    • 3

If your Corian has these stains, clean the counter with a product designed to remove hard-water marks.

To disinfect your Corian countertop, combine one part household bleach with one part water. Apply this bleach solution to your countertop and dry carefully. Disinfect in this way roughly once a month, making sure not to use bleach and ammonia together.
