How to Care for the Wood on an Old China Hutch

A hutch is an old-fashioned cabinet that was often used as a display piece. China hutches were meant to store and display all of the good china or porcelain dishes. Hutches came in different sizes and styles and can be found at many antique stores. Care must be taken in maintaining these old pieces. The wood will need special attention. If the wood is cracked and broken, it would be best to take it to a professional restorer to have it refinished.

Clean the hutch with a soft damp cloth to remove dirt, dust and grime that has accumulated over the years.

    • 2

Apply a coating of carnauba wax every three months or so. This will help protect it in daily use.

    • 3

Tighten up and oil the hinges every month with a screwdriver and some lubricant oil spray to keep the hinges tight and functioning.

    • 4
