DIY: Countertop With Clear Acrylic Over Shells

Trips to the seashore often provide a few seashell souvenirs. Rather than keeping them in a box or jar, you can use them as part of your home décor. A beautiful and functional way to use seashells is to cast them in a clear acrylic resin, which you can use to create your own countertop for a bathroom or kitchen to bring the beauty of the ocean into your home.
  1. Products

    • Choose a liquid resin and catalyst that will cure at room temperature.

Resin only has about a six-month shelf life, so purchase it when you're ready to begin casting the countertop.

Use appropriate safety equipment and work in an area with plenty of ventilation when mixing and pouring the chemicals and resin.

Choose shells with a low profile because they will require less resin to cover completely and decide whether to place the shells in a random design or a particular pattern.

To make the pattern easy to follow, draw it out on a sheet of paper. Number the shells in the order they'll appear in the pattern and write the numbers on the back side of the shells in permanent marker for easy identification.

    Preparing the Area

    • Measure the length and width of the countertop you want to cover with resin.

Liquid resin requires a mold, so use your measurements to create a metal, glass or non-reactive plastic frame around the countertop. It should sit slightly higher than the actual desired height of the countertop so there won't be any danger of spillage. If you use plastic to create a frame, ensure it will work with your chosen type of resin. Pour some water into the mold to test for leaks, then use plumber's tape or caulk to seal them.

    Mixing and Finishing Countertop

    • Mix your resin and catalyst in a non-reactive container for the first layer. Measure the catalyst as the directions state to ensure that your resin sets properly.

Pour a thin layer over the countertop so it reaches the edges of the mold. Let it set slightly, then add your shells in the pattern you desire. Do not to touch the resin with your fingers.

When the pattern is complete, measure and mix the resin and catalyst for the second layer. Use enough to fully cover the shells and allow to cure according to manufacturer's directions--up to 24 hours. Remove the mold and file or buff the edges of the countertop as needed to achieve a finished look.
