Aluminum Bowls vs. Stainless Steel Bowls

Bowls play a big role in the process of cooking, whether that role is mixing ingredients or serving food. They can be manufactured in many different materials, including aluminum and stainless steel, two common choices for kitchens everywhere.

    • Stainless steel is characterized by any metal alloy made of at least 11 percent chromium. Aluminum cookware can be pressed, cast, or anodized.

    Cost

    • Typically, comparably sized and quality aluminum bowls will be considerably more affordable than stainless steel bowls.

    Durability

    • Stainless steel is easily more durable than aluminum, as its qualities are very resistant to dents and scratches, whereas aluminum will need to be replaced after frequent use because of its flimsy structure.

    Cleaning

    • Aluminum is prone to discoloration and should never be cleaned in a dishwasher. Scrub the material with gentle detergent in warm water. Never use bleach or ammonia on stainless steel, although it is safe to wash in a dishwasher.

    Considerations

    • Although there are no definite facts proving it, consumption of food stored or cooked in aluminum material for long periods has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, according to Eartheasy. Stainless steel bowls do not have this risk.
