Instructions

  1. Building a Kitchen Island Cart

    • 1

Measure and cut the table legs to a length of 35 inches with the table saw. When the legs are cut, measure and mark where the shelf supports and apron pieces under the table top will be attached. Apron pieces are pieces of trim that fit under the top of the cart between the legs of the table. They add eye appeal and support for the cart top.

    • 2

Attach a wheel to the bottom of each leg with screws. Use locking wheels so that the cart can be kept stationary when needed.

    • 3

Cut the bottom shelf supports and the apron pieces. The short-side pieces should measure 28 inches and the front and back pieces should measure 34 inches.

    • 4

Attach the bottom shelf supports with screws. Insert the screws at a diagonal through the shelf support and into the table leg. Use two screws at each leg.

    • 5

Measure and cut the hardwood banding for the shelf and screw into place on the support beams that have already been glued into the notches of the legs.

    • 6

Cut the top of the kitchen island cart out of a sheet of 3/4-inch plywood. The table top should be measured three inches longer and wider than the base of the table to allow for 1 1/2 inch overhang all the way around the kitchen island.

    • 7

Secure the table top to the top of the base with screws inserted through the inside of the apron boards around the top of the base and diagonally into the bottom of the kitchen island top.

    • 8

Spread a layer of construction adhesive on the top of the plywood and press the slate table top firmly against the adhesive. Allow 24 hours for the mortar to set up.
