How to Glaze White Cabinets

If you would like to add a custom look to your plain white cabinets, glaze them yourself and save money. Glaze is a stain-like compound applied to wood finishes. The wood must be sealed with a top coat before glaze can be applied. Glaze provides a dark line around each detail and edge in your cabinets. When glazing white cabinets, choose a glaze that will complement the white color.

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Cabinets for Glaze

    • 1

Remove the doors and drawer fronts from the cabinets using a power drill. Remove any handles on the doors or drawer fronts.

    • 2

Clean the cabinets with mineral spirits and a wiping cloth. The mineral spirits will remove all the oils on the cabinets.

    • 3

Wipe the cabinets with a tack cloth. This will remove any dust from the cabinets.

    Glazing the Cabinets

    • 4

Stir the glaze well with a stirring stick.

    • 5

Apply the glaze with a wiping cloth. Work in small sections. Glaze can be applied in a circular or straight motion. Pay attention to crevices and grooves. Confirm that the glaze is in all the details.

    • 6

Wipe the glaze from the flat surfaces using a wiping cloth. The glaze can be left streaky or wiped clean, whichever you prefer. Streaky glaze will give the cabinets a rustic look. Glaze can be re-applied if needed.

    • 7

Continue throughout the entire cabinets. Allow the glaze to fully dry. Refer to the glaze label for appropriate dry times.
