DIY Building a Vegetable Storage Bin

A do-it-yourself vegetable storage bin can be inexpensive and doesn't require a lot of skill to make. If you can use a screwdriver and have ever glued anything, and have a pair of scissors, you have all the skills necessary for this economical and environmentally sustainable storage option.

Vegetable storage bins help keep produce that doesn't need refrigeration, such as potatoes, squash and onions fresh longer by ensuring good air circulation, thus preventing rot and mold. These bins prevent food waste and can be easily washed.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the wheels to the bottom of the egg crate, using the bolts, washers and nuts. Place the washers on the inside of the egg crate, thread the bolts through the washer from inside the egg crate, through the wheel attachment plate, and fasten underneath with the nuts.

    • 2

Cut a piece of burlap the size of the top of the egg crate, plus two inches. For instance, if the crate is 12 inches on each side, cut a piece of burlap 14 inches on each side. Hem the burlap all around by turning under the edge 1/2 inch, sewing all around, then turning another 1/2 inch, so that the raw edge is enclosed in the fold, and sewing around again to secure.

    • 3

Glue a piece of hook-and-loop fastener to the top lip of one side of the crate, from corner to corner. Glue the corresponding side of the hook-and-loop fastener to one edge of the burlap, positioning it 1 inch from each edge. Glue another piece of fastener, measuring 1 inch long, to the opposite side of the crate, on the outside, in the center. Glue the one-inch piece's corresponding piece of fastener to the the burlap opposite side the long piece of fastener, also in the center to form the cover's latch. Attach the burlap to the crate with the fasteners.
