How to Make a Wall Mounted Wood Shelf for Wine Glasses

A wine glass rack makes for a good storage solution if you lack cabinet space or simply have wine glasses attractive enough to be decorations in their own right. Wall racks use a vertical mount with the glasses hanging parallel to the mounting board. These plans build a wine rack that will fit the range of standard-sized wine glasses. You'll need to adjust the dimensions to fit brandy snifters, champagne flutes and margarita glasses.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Backboard

    • 1

Take the 12-inch-by-24-inch board to make your backboard. Drill three lines of three holes each using a drill bit 1/8 inch narrower than the diameter of your 1 1/2-inch wood screws. Run the lines parallel to the short edges of the board, each line consisting of one hole, each 1 inch, 6 inches and 11 inches from the long edge. Run the lines 1/2 inch, 8 inches and 16 inches from one short edge of the board.

    • 2

Drill two holes through the backboard using a drill bit the same diameter as the shaft of your 3-inch wood screws. Place the holes on the mid-line of the board between the long edges, one hole each 6 inches from either short edge of the board.

    • 3

Widen one side of each hole you drilled in Step 2 using a drill bit the same diameter as the heads of your 3-inch wood screws. Widen each hole to a depth of about 1/4 inch.

    • 4

Sand all surfaces of the backboard.

    • 5

Apply one coat of wood stain to all surfaces of the backboard. Allow to dry.

    Prepare the Mounting Board

    • 6

Take one 6-inch-by-12-inch board to form a mounting board. Drill three holes on center in one 12-inch edge of the board using a drill bit 1/8 inch narrower than the diameter of the 1 1/2-inch wood screws. Place the holes 1 inch, 6 inches and 11 inches from one end, drilled to a depth of 1/4 inch.

    • 7

Use the auger bit to drill two 1-inch diameter holes through the surface of your mounting board. Both holes should be on center between the long edges of the board, one each 6 inches from either short side of the board. If you're inexperienced using an auger bit, start by drilling a 1/4-inch hole and widening it with progressively larger drill bits.

    • 8

Cut a line with your jigsaw from the undrilled 12-inch edge of the board to the edge of one auger hole. Start the line 6 inches from the nearest 6-inch edge. Widen the line by 1/8 inch on either side to make a 1/4-inch-wide notch.

    • 9

Repeat Step 3 to cut a second notch between the edge and the remaining auger hole.

    • 10

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to prepare the two remaining support boards.

    • 11

Sand all faces of all three boards.

    • 12

Apply one coat of stain to all surfaces of each board. Allow to dry.

    Assemble and Mount

    • 13

Apply a thin coat of wood glue to the drilled edge of one mounting board. Set it on the front face (the face with the widened holes) of the backplate along one line of holes drilled in the back plate. Screw in place with three 1 1/2-inch wood screws driven through the holes in the backplate and into the holes in the mounting board.

    • 14

Repeat Step 3 to mount the remaining two mounting boards.

    • 15

Apply additional coats of stain to all visible surfaces except the back face of the backplate until the color of your rack reaches the color you want.

    • 16

Set the rack in place on your wall so that the two wider screw holes are in place over a wall stud. Screw in place with the 3-inch wood screws.

    • 17

Putty over the screw holes if desired. This will make for a more attractive finished product but does make removing the rack much more difficult.
