How to Put on Magnetic Door Latches

Magnetic door latches have many uses and can commonly be found in kitchens to keep cabinet doors closed. These types of door latches can also be used to child-proof cabinet doors. You can put on a magnetic door latch by first determining what type of latch you want to use with your kitchen cabinets.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door to a cabinet in your kitchen and determine where to install the latch by the way the door opens. The latch can go in the lower left or lower right corner at the front of the cabinet.

    • 2

Place the magnetic part of the latch on the lower left or right corner that you identified in Step 1. This part of the latch needs to be flush with the edge of the cabinet. If a template is included with the latch, place it in the corner where you want to mount the latch.

    • 3

Locate the holes in the template and then pre-drill holes into the side of the cabinet with the power drill.

    • 4

Remove the wax paper backing from the template and then close the cabinet door. The adhesive on the template will stick and allow it to be transferred to the door.

    • 5

Find the holes for the metal plate or lock and pre-drill holes into the side of the door. Peel the template off of the door.

    • 6

Align the holes in the magnetic part of the latch with the holes you pre-drilled in Step 3. Insert a screw, one included with the latch, into each screw hole and then tighten them with the power drill.

    • 7

Align the holes for the metal plate with the holes that you pre-drilled in Step 5. Insert a screw into each screw hole and tighten with the power drill or use the screwdriver.

    • 8

Close and open the door to test the new magnetic door latch.
