How to Install Inset Cabinet Hinges

Inset cabinet hinges differ from a traditional overlay hinge in that the inset hinges allow the cabinet door to inset the frame. The door and the cabinet frame remain flush when the doors are closed. Installation of inset hinges is identical to a traditional overlay hinge. You must specify inset hinges when ordering hinges. Door size also needs to be compensated for inset hinges because they set inside the cabinet frame.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cabinet door face down on a flat surface. Determine which side of the door will require hinges. This is only an issue if you have an arch on top of your cabinet doors. Place the hinge boring template on the door stile and align the template to the top and edge of the door. Mark the holes using a pencil.

    • 2

Mark the opposite end of the door using the template and a pencil. Remove the template from the door.

    • 3

Drill a 35mm hole 1/2-inch deep into the door in the center mark using a Forstner bit and a power drill.

    • 4

Drill 8mm holes at the two side marks using a drill bit and a power drill. Drill into the door 1/2-inch.

    • 5

Repeat the drilling process on the opposite end of the door.

    • 6

Remove the hinge plate from the inset hinge by pressing the release lever located on the hinge. Each brand of hinge has a different location for the release lever. Contact your hinge supplier if you cannot locate the release lever.

    • 7

Place the inset hinge into the holes and tighten the screws using a power drill.

    • 8

Place the mounting plate back onto the inset hinge.

    • 9

Hold the door in position on the cabinet. While holding the door next to the cabinet, fasten the hinge plate to the cabinet side using 5/8-inch screws and a power drill. Each inset hinge manufacturer has different hinge plate mounting locations, this technique will work for any hinge plate.

Repeat these steps to the remaining cabinet doors.
