How to Fix Cat Scratches on a Kitchen Table

Contrary to popular belief, cats do not scratch at surfaces to sharpen their claws, they scratch to leave their scented marks. Cats have glands in their paws that release a scent onto the surface when they flex their paws when scratching. Cats want other cats and people to know where they live and what they own. Unfortunately, sometimes when cats are claiming ownership, they scratch and ruin surfaces that we own.

Instructions

  1. Repairing Light Scratches

    • 1

Buy scratch cover in a similar shade as the wood finish, and apply it to scratch marks. Scratch cover is available as a marker-type pen or liquid applied with a rag. Apply thin, light coats, building the color to match the existing surface.

    • 2

Choose a matching shade of wood stain, and paint light layers of stain on the scratch marks with a small, thin paintbrush. Allow each coat of stain to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat.

    • 3

Choose wax sticks in a color that matches the wood finish. Rub wax sticks across the scratch marks to fill in and cover scratches.

    • 4

Mix instant coffee with water to make a thick paste, and rub the paste into scratches on dark wood tones.

    Repairing Deep, Splintered Scratches

    • 5

Sand splintered wood scratches with a fine grade sandpaper to smooth away rough edges.

    • 6

Brush away wood splinters and sawdust.

    • 7

Apply wood putty with a flexible putty knife, filling in deep scratches. Apply a second layer of wood putty over the first layer so it sits slightly higher than the surface.

    • 8

Allow the wood putty to dry fully. Sand the wood putty with a fine grade sandpaper to make it flush with the existing surface.

    • 9

Wipe away dust. Apply a matching color stain to blend in with the wood finish.
