Pitfalls of Granite Counters

Granite kitchen counters add a luxurious touch to any kitchen remodeling job. It's easy to maintain, heat resistant and extra durable. Not everything about granite countertops is perfect, however, as there are a few pitfalls to having this beautiful stone installed in your kitchen.
  1. Price

    • Granite is an expensive choice for kitchen counters. Because it is a natural stone, actual slabs of stone need to be selected by the homeowner. Then a team of professional craftsmen custom cut, polish and install the counters with extreme care.

    Damage From Acidic Foods

    • Granite countertops can be damaged by the natural acid in foods. Oranges, lemons and soft drinks can etch or dull the surface of a granite counter when spilled. Even coffee, wine or vinegar can inflict damage that will make a granite counter lose its shine. A granite counter needs to be sealed annually to prevent this kind of discoloration and maintain its shine.

    Chemicals Reduce Shine

    • Care must be taken with granite counters to preserve its shine. Normal household chemicals, like bleach cleansers, glass cleaners and degreasers can strip the protective sealant off the counter. If these harsh cleaning agents come in direct contact with the stone it can leave a permanent stain. Granite should be cleaned frequently with a gentle cleaner or just soap and water.
