How to Pick the Right Height Bar Stool

When purchasing a bar stool you need to make sure the height of the stool is appropriate for your counter. Bar stools come in several different heights. Most regular countertops measure 36 inches from the floor while bar countertops measure 40 inches. You want enough leg room to move your legs comfortably underneath the counter but not so much that you feel like you're sitting too low. With proper measuring you can determine the correct bar stool height for your counter.

Measure from the floor to the bottom of the countertop. Write the measurement on a piece of paper.

Subtract 8 to 12 inches from the floor-to-countertop measurement to allow for leg room. For less legroom opt for 8 inches and for the most opt for 12. Choose 10 inches for a normal legroom range.

Determine whether you require a counter-height, bar-height or extra-tall bar stool using your measurements. A counter stool normally ranges from 24 to 26 inches in seat height. A regular bar stool measures from 29 to 31 inches in seat height and an extra-tall bar stool measures 34 to 36 inches in seat height.
