How to Reupholster Kitchen Chair Cushions

The kitchen is typically the most often used room in a home. If the kitchen has seating, it will get lots of use. Unfortunately, this also means that is exposed to much more wear and tear than other pieces of furniture. If you want to restore an old kitchen chair or re-cover it to better coordinate with your kitchen decor, reupholstering is an affordable and easy-to-complete option.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cushion off the kitchen chair. In many cases, the cushion has ties that attach it to the back of the chair. Some chairs, however, have the cushion screwed in place to the chair's frame. If so, reserve the screws so the cushion can be replaced after your reupholstering is complete. Remove any existing fabric covering the seat cushions.

Replace the upholstery foam that makes up the shape of the cushion. If the previous foam is still intact this is not necessary, but it is an inexpensive way to revitalize an old chair. For added comfort, wrap an even layer of cotton batting around the top and sides of the cushion and glue in place with spray adhesive.

Lay the cushion flat over your new piece of fabric, print side facing down. If your cushion will be attached to the chair frame, pull the fabric taut over the underside of the cushion and staple in place with a staple gun. If it is a removable piece, double the fabric over the cushion and trace out the shape directly onto the fabric. Sew three sides closed and cut off excess material. Turn it inside out and insert your cushion, sewing closed by hand.

Attach the cushion to the chair frame, using the reserved screws. If your cushion is removable, add 4-inch strips of ribbon or fabric to either corner of the back of the cushion. Tie in place to the chair's seat or frame.
