How to Make a Tilt Out Trash Can

Use the circular saw to cut the oak boards to the appropriate sizes. Select which board of the 19-inch by 32-inch boards will be used for the front of the cabinet.

Measure with a tape 2 inches from the bottom of the front board and mark the spot with a pencil. Use a level to draw a straight line across the bottom of the board. Use a circular saw to cut off the bottom 2 inches.

Spread wood glue on the bottom 2 inches of the edge of the 14-inch by 32-inch side panels. Position the 19-inch by 2-inch board on the spread glue. Make sure the edge of the board is flush with the edge of the side panels. Secure the board in place with wood clamps. Use a hammer and finishing nails to provide extra support to the wood glue. Drive the finishing nails through the end of the edge of the 2-inch piece and into the edge of the side panel. Repeat the entire process for the back 19-inch by 32-inch panel of the cabinet.

Cut four 1-inch by 1-inch wood supports to 7 inches long. Secure the supports to the inside of the cabinet with the drill and the 1 1/2-inch wood screws. The supports should be positioned so that that the top of the support is 2 inches from the bottom of the cabinet. Secure the support in the middle of the cabinet wall at the 2-inch height.

Position the 14-inch by 19-inch board with the edge of the board flush against the bottom edge of the board that will be used for the door of the cabinet. Spread glue along the edge of the 14-inch by 19-inch board, press it against the bottom edge of the door panel and secure with wood clamps. Drive finishing nails through the front of door panel and into the edge of the 14-inch by 19-inch board to help secure it in place. This will create the floor of the cabinet that supports the trash can.

Cut two pieces of 1-inch by 1-inch wood supports to 4 inches long. Use the circular saw to cut a 45 degree angle at each end of the supports. Position the supports so one end is flush with the edge of the cabinet floor and the other is flush with the edge of the door panel. Use 1 1/2-inch wood screws to secure the supports in place.

Attach the hinges to the edge of the bottom piece on the front of the cabinet and the other half of the hinge to the bottom of the cabinet floor. Use the screws that came with the hinges. Close the door of the garbage can cabinet.

Position the pull handle on the front of the cabinet door and secure in place with the drill and the hardware provided with the handle.

Spread wood glue on the top side panel edges and the top edge of the back panel. Position the 15-inch by 20-inch piece of wood on top of the cabinet. Allow for a 1/2-inch over hang around all edges. Use finishing nails through the top of the cabinet to reinforce the wood glue.

Sand and finish the cabinet as desired.
