How to Make a Kitchen Island From Recycled Materials

A kitchen island provides additional storage, additional workspace and a distinctive look to your kitchen. A renovation may be too costly to add an island to your existing kitchen. Repurposing other furniture can be cost-effective, interesting and sustainable as an alternative approach to this idea. A kitchen island that is formed from the use of an old piece of furniture is a green alternative, and it can provide a funky, new look to your kitchen.

Measure the area of your kitchen where the island will be positioned. Make a note of this measurement. For example, if your kitchen is U-shaped, measure between the countertops on either side toward the center of the kitchen. Measure from the back wall toward the center. Estimate the ideal size for the island you desire. This data will determine the size of the butcher block or countertop piece you will require for the top of the island, as the dresser below will be much smaller to accommodate for standing and possibly sitting room.

Purchase or make a butcher block or wood counter piece. This will be a piece of wood approximately 1 1/2 inches thick and the desired length and width acquired from your earlier measurements. Make sure the piece is finished cleanly with no possibility of splinters. Sand if necessary, and apply a nontoxic finish that is specific to this purpose. This can be purchased at any hardware or department store.

Locate, purchase or reuse a dresser for the counter support. If using one dresser, make sure it is sturdy enough to support the counter piece. Ensure it matches the measurements for the ideal position. For example, if you require a kitchen island that is 4 feet by 4 feet, a dresser with a minimum size of 2 feet by 2 feet should be used for proper support.

Determine if you want seating space below the island, as this is a common function for this piece of furniture. If seating room is required, ensure the countertop hangs over the dresser far enough to allow for comfortable seating. For example, the counter should become a cantilever over the dresser by at least 2 feet. In this case, the dresser would need to be pushed to one end below counter so it is opposite the seating space.

Mark the top of the dresser where the countertop will be applied. Apply the industrial strength adhesive according to the package instructions to the top of the dresser. Install the countertop to the top of the dresser, pressing down firmly. Wait 24 hours or more, and ensure the counter has adhered properly.
