How to Install Kitchen Cabinet Fasteners

Restoring a kitchen or giving it a new look is easy with the installation of updated fasteners. Old cabinet hinges often get painted over and don't operate as well. They also can chip, which makes the fasteners look old and unkempt. A simple soak in mineral spirits will soften up the old paint so you can remove it. A fresh spray of metal paint will brighten them for reinstallation. Drawer pulls and cabinet knobs can refresh the look of the kitchen when replaced with up-to-date hardware.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure from the bottoms and sides of the cabinets to mark where the knobs will go. Each cabinet needs to be measured the same way to ensure the knobs will all be in the same place and match. For instance, measure 2 inches from the bottom and 1 1/2 inches from the inside on each cabinet. Once you have a measurement, mark it with a pencil.

    • 2

Drill holes where the marks were placed. The size of the drill bit needs to be the same size as the screw that will affix the fastener. Blow out the sawdust and wood shavings so the hole is prepared for the screw. Drill all the holes in all the pieces at once so you can move on to the fastener installation.

    • 3

Place a knob on the outside of the cabinet and insert the screw on the inside. Hand-tighten and use a screwdriver to finish tightening the screw while holding the knob steady.

    • 4

Install drawer pulls slightly differently. Measure from the top and in from both sides to find a midpoint. Center the drawer pull and mark the hole(s) on the back. Drill out the hole(s), then screw on the handles or knobs. Make certain the measurements are the same for all the drawers, so all pulls are centered even if the drawers have different depths.

Hold the cabinet doors up to the cabinet compartments. Measure 2 inches down from the top at the hinge edge and mark it. Measure 2 inches up from the bottom on the hinge edge and mark with the pencil. Hold the hinges with the top hole at the top mark and mark the second hole in the hinge. Do the same thing with the bottom hinge, only hold it so the bottom hole matches the lower mark. You should have four marks.

Drill all four holes and affix the outsides of the hinges with screws. Hold the cabinet doors up and mark the holes where the hinge will affix to the door. Drill those four holes. Hold the cabinet door up again and screw on the rest of the hinge. Mount each door in an identical manner, using the same measurements from the edges.
