What Is the Difference Between Maple and Oak Cabinets?

Maple and oak are two commonly used woods for home cabinets. While oak has long been a popular choice for cabinets, in recent years maple has become the new standard. Before choosing either, you should know what makes them different from each other.
  1. Durability

    • Oak is well-known for its strength and durability. It is usually harder and heavier than maple, and cut thicker as well. However, in most cases maple and most other woods commonly used for cabinetry are more than strong enough. In fact, if you are looking for lightweight, thinner cabinets, then the sturdiness of oak may actually be a deterrent, as oak cabinets are thick and heavy.

    Appearance

    • Maple is much smoother and sleeker than oak, which has visible pores and a grainy texture. Maple also tends to be white, while the majority of oak wood sold in America is red or brown. Both woods can be stained to change their color, although the lighter color of maple allows for more variety in color of the stain.

    Price

    • As of January 2011, many cabinet makers, including Accent Building Products, say that maple is now more popular than oak. So, those looking for a deal on cabinets may want to look at oak, since the decreased demand for the wood has slashed prices.
