How to Change a Futon Into a Couch

A futon is already a couch when it's folded in the proper position, but you can make your futon more like a couch and less like a padded frame. This requires the use of very few materials -- and you don't need experience with crafting to complete. Turning your futon into a couch gives you the opportunity to make the furniture more comfortable, while adding it as part of your home's decor scheme.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the futon into a couch shape. This is achieved by pushing down on the center of the flattened futon frame so that the head and foot areas of the bed tilt upward. Grasp each end and pull them together to pop the futon into a couch shape.

    • 2

Adjust the futon mattress to evenly sit on the futon. Layer the featherbed mattress over the futon mattress, bending it into the proper shape. Choose a featherbed that suits the size of a full-size bed.

    • 3

Snap a fitted sheet over the futon frame and mattresses. Attach the mattress garters to the cornered undersides of the bottom mattress. This keeps the mattresses together and on the frame.

    • 4

Slide the sofa cover over the entire frame of the futon to conceal the frame and covered mattresses, giving the appearance of a normal sofa.

    • 5

Select assorted throw pillows that match the sofa cover. Place them in the corners of the couch near the arms for padding and ornamental accent.
