Sand the entire surface of the oak table with a 600-grit sanding block. In order for the stain to soak into the wood, you must remove all of the old finish to expose the wood pores. Wipe off the sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Apply a small amount of wood stain to a sponge and run the surface of the oak with the sponge. Do your best to apply the stain in a uniform coat. After 15 minutes, rub the excess stain off with a clean rag. Apply a second and third coat to darken the stain and to ensure a uniform color. Allow 24 hours drying time after the third coat of stain.
Apply a small amount of lacquer to a sponge or a rag and apply a thin coat to the surface of the wood. Allow adequate drying time for the lacquer to cure. Before adding a second coat, lightly sand the surface of the lacquer with a 1,000-grit sanding block. Apply three total coats of lacquer and sand in between coats. Applying the lacquer by hand will allow you to get the lacquer into the tight grain of the oak to add better protection.
