Sand the entire surface of the chair with fine-grit sandpaper in the same direction as the wood grain. Sand until the surface appears dull. This will provide a slightly rough surface to allow the primer to properly adhere.
Wipe off the dust from sanding with a tack cloth.
Apply an even coat of primer onto the chair with a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry at least four hours.
Brush on two light coats of paint. Allow the paint to dry at least four hours between coats. Allow the paint to dry for at least 72 hours after the final coat before use.
Sand the entire surface of the chair with medium-grit sandpaper until you have removed the glossy finish.
Remove the wood finish completely with a progression of medium- to fine-grit sandpaper.
Brush on an even coat of dark pigmented stain with a stain brush. Allow the stain to dry for 72 hours.
Rub a finishing wax over the entire chair to complete the finish using a clean cloth rag. Buff the surface in gentle circles once you have applied the wax until you are satisfied with the sheen. The dark finish will give the oak chair a contemporary and refined look.
