How to Make a Glass Cabinet More Opaque

Professionally etching glass with acid to make the glass translucent and hard to see though is the most effective way to decrease visibility into a cabinet, but a semi-permanent etched glass effect can be achieved through the use of special contact paper designed to decrease the transparency of glass. This contact paper is often called privacy film, and is a much more cost effective method of making it more difficult to see into your glass cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the privacy film kit, and sort the items. You should have a roll of contact paper, a spray bottle of solution, and a flat plastic squeegee-like tool. Some kits have a different adhesive that does not require the spray solution. This type of privacy film is quicker to apply, but can be more difficult to remove and may leave residue.

    • 2

Measure the glass, and mark the privacy film accordingly. Cut out the panels of contact paper to the correct size.

    • 3

Clean the glass thoroughly with window cleaner and a lint free cloth. Allow it to dry.

    • 4

Spray the glass with the solution included in the kit. Starting in the upper corner, stick the film into place. Slowly apply more of the film, and flatten it down with the squeegee tool.

Continue until all of the film has been applied and no air bubbles remain. Repeat on any other glass sections of the cabinet.
