Wire Spool Table Crafts

Wooden wire and cable spool tables are a stereotypical piece of college apartment furniture. So once you have obtained your diploma and moved into a home, what should you do with your spool table? Instead of tossing it on the curb to be picked up as trash, try renovating your spool with craft projects.
  1. Original Rope Tables

    • One approach to renovating your old wire spool table is to give it a shiny new coat of stain. Sand off any original stain or splinters before beginning. Restain your spool in a light butterscotch color and paint it with polyurethane once dry. Once the polyurethane has dried, rewrap your spool in around 50 yards of rope. Keep the rope in place and sealed using another layer of polyurethane. Check the table for drips or missed spots before displaying your new side table.

    Mosaic Spool Table

    • You can turn your wire spool from a student's table into a classy addition to your home by adding a mosaic pattern to the top. Start by sanding off the entire spool and repainting it in a neutral color, such as black or white. Using the colors of your home, create a design on paper for the mosaic. You can either shape tiles to fit onto the spool's circular top, or attach a piece of finish-grade plywood cut just a little larger than the tabletop. Use mortar to piece the tiles onto the wood and wait for it to dry.

    Paint-Decorated Tables

    • A simple, yet elegant, way to reinvigorate your spool table is to give it a new paint job. Sand off the spool for a clean surface. Choose a neutral base, such as black or dark gray. For additional aesthetic appeal, paint on a design that fits your home. Fleur de lis designs are an elegant way to decorate your spool. Once the design is dry, cover your spool in polyurethane to protect it. An alternative design is to use a bright, lively color such as red or bright green. Paint on sunflowers or watering cans and place it in your garden as a patio table.

    Metallic Spool Tables

    • A more modern way to liven up your old spool is to give it a metallic finish. Spray paint works well for this job. Before you begin, sand off any original stain or splintered surfaces on the spool. Prime the spool using white paint. Choose a metallic spray paint, such as chrome or bronze, that complements the colors of your home. You may need to apply two or three coats of paint to obtain a clean, metallic shine.
