Counter Stool Description

The counter stool is underrated and misunderstood. Often confused with the bar stool, the counter stool has different dimensions and applications. If you use a bar stool where a counter stool should be used, you will be uncomfortable and your seating area will appear awkward. Counter stools are generally less expensive than bar stools, so it makes sense to use a counter stool when one is appropriate.
  1. Size

    • The seat height of a counter stool is between 24 and 26 inches, compared to a seat height of 30 inches for a bar stool. When ordering a counter stool from a manufacturer or retailer, be sure to ask for the correct seat height. Some manufacturers provide both the seat height and back height for stools with backs. Counter stools are designed for seating at a counter of 34 inches or higher, but less than the height of a bar of 40 inches.

    Materials

    • Counter stools are available in a variety of metals, woods and other materials. Stainless steel counter stools are among the most durable. Iron counter stools can be ordered in a variety of finishes from a custom-order furniture store. Hardwoods, such as cherry, mahogany and maple, are used for many styles of traditional and contemporary counter stools and can be found in a variety of colored stains. Rattan counter stools are attractive and are often used with tropical decor. You will likely find an assortment of materials for seats, including wood and upholstered seats in cloth or leather.

    Style Details

    • When searching for counter stools, you will find a selection of stools with and without backs. The construction and height of backs can differ greatly, so determine where you would like the top to reach so that it is comfortable when you lean against it. You will sometimes also have a choice of stationary or swivel stools. Some counter stools have arms, so allow extra room between stools for users to seat and unseat themselves if you choose a style with arms.

    Uses

    • Counters, counter-height bars and kitchen islands in today's kitchens are ideal places for counter stools. Not only do counter stools make kitchen work more comfortable, but they also allow family and guests to gather in the work area. In addition, counter stools are appropriate for counter-height breakfast tables, sometimes called gathering tables if they are square. You may wish to place a counter stool in the laundry room also, to make chores easier in that area. In the workshop or game room, counter stools provide extra seating without taking up much floor space.
