Types of Counter Top Tiles

Replacing the tiles on your counter tops can change the appearance and the functionality of any surface, regardless of the room. Because there are numerous types of tiles available, you must decide which will be the most suitable for your needs. Each tile has pros and cons that should be taken into consideration prior to purchase. For that reason, it is important to know what options are available and what the differences are between them.
  1. Ceramic

    • Ceramic counter top tiles are made from baked clay. They are a low-maintenance type of tile and one of the least expensive. While ceramic tile is waterproof and can stand high temperatures, it is susceptible to cracking if heavy items are dropped or forcefully hit against it. Ceramic tiles can be found either glazed or unglazed.

    Porcelain

    • Porcelain counter top tiles are made from porcelain clay and are baked at higher temperatures than the clay for ceramic tile. The visible color runs through the tile so that surface chips and nicks are not readily noticeable. In addition, porcelain tiles are stain-resistant.

    Natural Stone

    • There are several types of natural stone tiles, including granite, slate, marble and limestone. They are generally cut into thin squares for counter tops and are not difficult to clean. Granite tiles are durable and resist chipping and scratching. They are porous and must be sealed yearly. Marble must also be sealed yearly and gives counters a smooth surface; however, it is less durable than other types of stone such as granite. Limestone tile has a tendency to stain easily, which makes it a questionable choice for kitchen counter tops. Slate is a durable and attractive tile that is difficult to stain.

    Quartz

    • Quartz tile has an appearance similar to granite; however, it is made from crushed quartz, which is a type of crystal. It is long-lasting and its surface is hard enough not to scratch, but it can only tolerate moderate levels of heat. Because it is a non-porous tile, it will not stain and does not require sealing the way that granite and other stone tiles do.

    Mosaic

    • Mosaic tiles can be made of porcelain, glass or ceramic. They are typically available in squares that are 2 inches or smaller. They are available glazed or unglazed, however most porcelain mosaics are unglazed. For ease of installation, mosaic tiles are sheet-mounted, although some may be purchased loose. This type of tile can be installed mismatched, to create unusual looks for the counter top.
