DIY Cart Design

Making your own cart design allows you to choose the amount of storage you have, the top your cart has and the way the piece is finished. Designing your own cart is typically less expensive than having one custom made for you by a furniture store or a carpenter. Choose your base pieces according to your needs. Select dressers for storage or open shelves for display. Save even more by picking up your base pieces at flea markets or consignment shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with two matching pieces. Choose matching dressers, end tables or filing cabinets.

    • 2

Attach the two pieces back to back. Use construction adhesive and screw them together with screws and a drill.

    • 3

Sand and paint the base of your kitchen cart. Use high-grit sand paper to sand the surface to prepare it for paint. Wipe off the dust created by sanding with a tack cloth. Paint the surface to match your kitchen decor. Choose paint that's appropriate for the surface of your base. Let your base dry overnight.

    • 4

Turn your base upside down and attach wheels to your cart. Use locking wheels and screw them directly into the corners of your base. Install wheels at the point where your bases are joined, screwing the wheel into both bases for stability.

    • 5

Choose a remnant piece of stone like granite or slate. Measure the stone so you pick one that extends at least 4 inches on each side than your base. Apply construction adhesive to the base and position your stone. Let it dry overnight before you use the kitchen cart.

    • 6

Add two towel bars, side by side, on one side of your cart. Screw them into the side of the cart with a drill and the screws that come with your towel bars.

    • 7

Install one long metal towel bar on the other side of your cart. Choose a towel bar that spans most of the width of both your base pieces and center it so the distance on each end of the towel bar is the same. Screw it into place and hang several metal S hooks from it. Hang your large metal kitchen tools or small pots and pans from the S hooks.
