Take two pieces of furniture that are the same size. Use matching dressers or bookshelves to create your kitchen island cart. Stand the pieces back to back and attach them together. Use a drill and screws, along with construction adhesive to join them into one piece of furniture.
Lightly sand your kitchen cart to scuff up the finish and allow the new paint to adhere. Wipe the piece clean with a tack cloth and paint it to match your kitchen. Let the kitchen cart dry overnight.
Lay the kitchen cart on its side and install locking wheels to the bottom corners. Install wheels on the sides where the two pieces are connected, making sure the wheel is screwed into both pieces for stability. Screw through the pre-existing holes in the wheel assembly and into the furniture.
Top your kitchen cart with butcher block. Pick up the butcher block at your local home improvement center. Center the butcher block on your kitchen cart and adhere with construction adhesive. Use L-brackets on the sides of the kitchen cart to further secure the butcher block in place. Use at least two on each side. Locate them at the top of the cart and under the butcher block so they're not seen. You can also paint over them if you wish to conceal them further.
