Standard Kitchen Cupboard Dimensions

Both floor-based and wall-mounted kitchen cupboards have standard dimensions to create a cohesive cabinet design and provide all cupboard doors with a smooth surface. These standard dimensions are frequently used for other storage cabinets in other rooms in the home, including basements and garages. Familiarize yourself with the standard cupboard dimensions before you venture into cutting and building your own storage cupboards.
  1. Floor-Based Cupboards

    • All floor-based cupboards have the same depth and height, even though some are single-door designs and others are wider double-door cupboards. The standard cupboard height is 34 1/2 inches and 24 inches deep. The height is the same to provide consistency with the countertop and the depth is the same to provide a smooth cupboard door surface. The width of floor-based cupboards differs, as single-door cupboards may measure between 9 inches and 21 inches wide. Double-door cupboards are between 24inches and 36 inches wide.

    Upper Cupboards

    • Upper cupboards are those hanging on the wall above the countertop, whether in a kitchen, basement or garage. These units are 30 inches high and a mere 12 inches deep. These dimensions are standard for upper cabinets in both single- and double-door design. The overall cupboard width falls between 9 inches and 21 inches for single-wall cabinets, while double-door wall cabinets are between 21 inches and 36 inches wide.

    Sink Cupboards

    • Sink cupboards are those located beneath the sink. The height and depth are identical to floor-based cupboards so as to obtain a consistent design. The width depends on the pipes under the sink. The common width falls between 30 inches and 36 inches and this type of cupboard often has double doors.

    Corner Cupboards

    • Corner cupboards are found both on the floor and on the wall. The dimensions differ for each design, as floor-based cupboards have 90-degree corners, while the wall cupboard front sits at a 45-degree angle. The depth is the same as floor-based cupboards for consistency. The floor-corner cupboard measures 34 1/2 inches in height. The width is approximately 36 inches on both sides of the cupboard walls facing the wall. The wall cupboards are 40 inches high and measure 24 inches in width on both of the cupboard sides facing the corner walls.
