How to Paint a Barstool

Barstools are fundamental pieces of furniture in many kitchens. Once you buy a set, it’s a shame to throw them out even as they dent, wear and scratch. With a quick coat of paint, a barstool looks new without the accompanying price tag.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray paint with gloss sheen

Instructions

    • 1

Place the barstool on a protected surface in a well-ventilated area. Choose a windless day if you spray paint outside.

    • 2

Remove the cushion with a screwdriver if the barstool has a cushion.

    • 3

Decide if you want to sand the barstool. Nicks and dents may add personality to the stool that you want to keep. If the existing paint is chipping or if you want to stain the wood, sanding is the best option.

    • 4

Prime the wood, whether you sand it or not. Use a wood primer hue that resembles the color you plan to paint the barstool. Allow the primer to dry before moving on.

    • 5

Remove the spray paint’s lid and shake the can up and down several times.

    • 6

Spray paint the barstool in a back-and-forth motion. Choosing a gloss sheen spray paint allows for easier wiping when the barstool is used again. By priming the wood and applying gloss sheen spray paint, the finished product has a satin look.

    • 7

Allow the barstool to dry after the first coat of spray paint and apply a second coat if necessary. Give the stool time to dry before moving on.

    • 8

Apply a layer of polyacrylic to seal and protect the surface. This material doesn’t turn yellow or bubble over time, and it doesn’t give off a strong odor.

    • 9

Wait for a few days so the wood can cure before using the barstool again.
